Searching Features
- Full Search Options
- Phantom allows basic search options such as boolean all/any selection, title, or URL only searches. It also has a range of more advanced search options including phonetic searching or date-based "what's new" searches.
- Detailed Search Results
- Phantom returns search results in basic or detailed format, and always returns results ranked by their relevance to the search words. Basic results include a link to the page with the title, its size and last modified date. Detailed results add the URL, the description of the page and a link to find other similar pages. Results always include a graphic flag indicating pages that are new or recently updated.
-
- User-Defined Agents
- After a successful search, users can define an Agent to notify them of new or updated information. Phantom will automatically send a list of new or updated pages to users via e-mail. Turn your site into an information service!
- Query By Example
- Phantom supports QBE searches, also known as "like this" or "find similar". Detailed search results include a "Find Similar Pages" to help users locate pages that may contain related information but don't include the keywords they were searching for. This way Phantom helps users find things they don't know are on a site, as well as locating things they do know are there.
-
- And Much More
- Advanced phonetic, related page and date searching options
- Relevance ranking of search results
- Noise word filtering
Administration and Indexing Features
- Robot-Based Indexing
- Phantom is a Web robot so it can index any page accessible over the Web. Of course, Phantom supports local crawling as well. This gives you tremendous flexibility versus file-system based searching for remote sites or sites with multiple servers. Seamlessly search many sites with a single copy of Phantom!
- Customizable for Your Site
- Phantom's HMTL search form is fully customizable so searches will look like the rest of your site, not some canned add-on. Every bit of HTML that Phantom sends can be customized, including results format, headers and footers and the entire search page.
Since they are just HTML forms, search pages can be on any server, anywhere on the Internet. Add a search form to any (or every!) page on your site, or associated sites.
-
- Simple, Web-Based Administration
- Phantom is controlled through a Web interface. Ideal for co-located sites, Phantom can be controlled remotely from anywhere on the Internet. No configuration files, no PERL scripts and no separate admin or "indexer" applications! Just load the adminstration URL into your Web browser and enter the Admin username and password.
- Multiple Virtual Search Engines
- Phantom lets you create separate indexes for different sites. Search each separately, or in groups. Separate indexes can have different search and results pages, so a single copy of Phantom can appear to be several separate engines.
So you only have one Web site? Multiple searches are great for different parts of a single site, too. Visit some of the search pages on our Web site:
-
- Automatic Updates
- Searches aren't very useful if they return stale links. To prevent this, Phantom will automatically update its index of a site on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Updates are incremental, so only new pages will be indexed saving time and bandwidth.
- Multiple Document Formats
- Looking for a web-based PDF search tool for your intranet? Phantom can index HTML pages and plain text documents, but also supports indexing text from Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
- META Tag Support
- Phantom fully supports META Keywords and Description tags in the pages it indexes. Keywords will help users find the pages that are really relevant to what they are looking for. Descriptions in detailed search results include information from the META Description tag, not random excerpts or an inaccurate automatic summary.
- Integrated Web Server
- Phantom has a built-in Web server mode so it can operate on a separate machine as a stand-alone search server. Phantom can also operate as a CGI with your existing Web server.
- The Well-Tempered Robot
- Phantom's robot crawler follows established guidelines for Web robots. The Phantom robot limits its hit rate on each server, and follows the robot exclusion standard checking every site it visits for a "robots.txt" file and following it exactly.
- Relational Database Engine
- Pages found by Phantom's robot are indexed into a true relational database engine for powerful searching with a compact index file.
- And Much More
- Site Mirroring
- Page Content Filter
- Automatic data backup
- Automatic site mapping
- User-configurable noise word list
